A phase, not a personality box
Wood belongs to the five-phase vocabulary used across several Chinese traditions. Here we use its imagery to explore growth, vision and the courage to begin. These associations are cultural and interpretive; they do not measure a person’s abilities, health or future.
It helps to hold the language lightly. An image can make a question memorable, but whether the question fits depends on your experiences and context.
Its two stem expressions
甲 Jiǎ is the Yang expression: A tall tree grows toward light while relying on roots that nobody sees. In this tradition, Jia represents the visible, directional movement of Wood.
乙 Yǐ is the Yin expression: A vine finds an opening where a tree cannot grow. Yi is the flexible, relational expression of Wood: gradual growth through contact and adjustment.
A relationship with the other phases
In the generating cycle, Wood contributes to Fire, and Water contributes to Wood. Read this as a pattern of symbolic relationships rather than a rule predicting how two people will behave.
In a real collaboration, both people can take different roles at different times. A useful conversation asks what support is wanted and what conditions make it possible.
What the percentage means
A Wood value in our chart is a count of visible stem and principal branch categories, out of eight. Two characters produce 25%. That number is inspectable arithmetic, not a diagnosis or a recommendation to increase or decrease an element.
Traditional strength interpretation also considers seasonal conditions and other layers we do not weight in this visualization. A zero does not mean a part of you is absent.
Two ways to reflect
Name one principle worth protecting and one plan you are willing to change.
Choose a small boundary and express it without over-explaining.
Choose the prompt that speaks to something real this week. Record what happened and what did not. You do not need to purchase a lucky object or adopt an identity to try a small experiment.
