Editorial artwork for Five elements

Five phases, rather than five ingredients

Wuxing is often translated as “five elements,” but “five phases” helps convey its dynamic quality. In traditional systems these categories organize patterns and relationships; they are not the chemical elements of modern science.

Wood suggests growth, Fire expression, Earth steadiness, Metal refinement and Water flow. These are starting metaphors. Their interpretation varies with the tradition and context.

Two cycles to know

The generating cycle runs Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. The controlling cycle runs Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood. A useful image is a network of contributions and constraints, not a contest with a winner.

“Control” does not mean two people are enemies, and “generation” does not prove they are compatible. These are relations between categories inside a symbolic system.

What our bars actually count

Our chart counts the principal element of each of the four visible stems and four visible branches. Eight characters give eight counts, so one count equals 12.5%. The bars are deliberately transparent and easy to inspect.

This is not a traditional strength calculation. It does not weigh hidden stems, seasonal influence, transformations or an entire interpretive school. Equal bars are not a health target and a zero is not a personal defect.

Use the vocabulary lightly

Try five questions: What am I growing? What do I want to express? What needs a reliable base? What could I simplify? What am I still curious about?

Choose the question that helps with a real situation. You do not need to buy an object, wear a prescribed color or change your life to compensate for a chart count.

Find the story in your own chart.
